Oct. 31, 2017 "Halloween Miracles"

Halloween Miracles

Hello family!
I don't really know how to sum up this week into a few words so I'll just tell ya about it
So first of all... literally ALL of our scheduled and rescheduled appointments fell through this week. Agh! Frustrations. However, we didn't let that get us down.
Sister Licona and I went to work trying to contact and find people! And we were able to meet a lot of less actives we didn't know before and talk with a few people who told us we "shouldn't be in their neighborhood", or that they "already got Jesus"
BUT lo and behold, our hard work and efforts paid off!!! Thursday night was the chili cook off/trunk or treat ward activity. And you know we invited everyone and their stray dog! Seriously though, we were able to contact a former investigator Family (the Rayburn's) the day before and invite them and they CAME! And so did Leah and her friend and 2 of the less actives we invited AND our other investigator who's living with less actives and our recent converts and IT WAS JUST AMAZING! They were able to meet so many members of the ward and the chili was good and so we're the costumes! It was a good night.
Then we had a few more miracles that I want to share , that really helped to solidify my testimony that this is the true church.
First miracle would be Friday morning.... the elders asked us to come and do service with them for a less active member. Turns out we were doing service for the nonmember guy Tony who lives with less actives. He asked us to help him clean out his basement/cellar. And he's like "you will get dirty. And it will be revolting." So you could just imagine how we were feeling. His basement has all these waste materials from his construction work and they'd been sitting there for like yrs probably and the water and mud had washed into the place from yrs of rain so it really soiled and rotted everything. To keep things short, let's just say I was praying that God would help me not freak out or be too grossed out. So to get my mind off things, I figured, well, let's get to know this guy! We ended up talking to him the entire time about his religious background, and for some reason, I felt to be super bold. We ended up teaching him the entire restoration in answer to his questions, such as, "if God is so loving, then why would He doom us to burn in hell after this life?" Or "why are there so many different churches if there is one God?" We testified to him that God does love us and has provided those answers for us through living prophets in these latter days. The truth has been restored. He said he would read the Book of Mormon to know and also come to church on Sunday! The elders are going back Tuesday as well to teach him more. Good things coming!!
Next miracle was that night. Okay so at the VC, it's been slower, and it's not super duper common for nonmembers to come in, (least I haven't had a ton of experience with it) HOWEVER that day, Two guys came in back to back who were super interested in the church history and weren't members. The first guy was pretty cool, he just loves the church and stuff but doesn't believe the Book of Mormon (?!?) haha but then the next guy that came in was RLDS. But to be more specific, this guy was not part of the now Community of Christ church, but part of a few split off groups called Restoration Branches. He had been a tour guide at Nauvoo and such for years and really has a passion for Joseph Smith. So we took him on the history tour and he was super into it, (like taking a normal active member through) but the last video got him. I have never been so thankful for this video!! At the end of the history tour, there is this super powerful video where it shows different video clips starting at the pioneer trek and showing the progression and growth of the church until today. The spirit is so strong any time you watch it! So this guy watches it, and afterward, we ask him what he felt as he watched it. He goes, "You know, I've always been jealous of the Mormon church."
That took us off guard, so I'm like, "why are you jealous of our church??"
"Well because my church was really strong, and now we are just declining ... then your church just keeps getting stronger."
"And why do you think that is?"
He said it was because we had our focus on the family and that that was really foundational for a strong church. But he told us that he "was thinking about a lot of things during that video" but didn't really want to admit what. But we testified to Him that this was the true church and invited him to ponder on what he'd felt and thought here. And he ended up asking a lot of questions about what we believe on life after death so we gave him a plan of salvation Pamphlet and our number! But that guy felt something and knew it was true. And he'll be back.

Last miracle was last night!! So we had dinner with this poly family the Polis lol (pole-y) but we had such a good discussion with Brother Poli who is just an awesome member. He said something he learned on his mission was this:
"With the quote that no unhallowed hand can stop the work from progressing ...That is true with people who will accept the Gospel! They're going to accept it mo matter what. God knows that. Nothing will truly get in the way of that when their time is right. Whether or not we get to be apart of that p, however, is dependable on if we are perfectly obedient and working hard. That is what will will qualify us to be a part of their conversion."
So we left that dinner with SO much excitement and motivation to be obedient and find those people! We didn't have a lot of time, and after we tried a few people who weren't home, we felt like we should try this other less active. It was like 8:25pm and we were worried they would be freaked out cus it was late (and they were) but they let us in and long story short we ended up answering a lot of Rikky(the member)'s husband (can't remember his name) questions he had. Such as "why makes you Mormons so different than baptist if we all believe the same bible?" So we taught the Restoration, and it wasn't getting through to him so we just testified to him and told him that if he really wanted to know, he had to read and pray and act to know for himself. Anything we said wouldn't convince him, only the spirit. Then Sister Licona bore the most powerful testimony about Jesus Christ and His church and this man standing there, skeptical before us, smoking a cigarette, softened a little and said we could come back on Wednesday before he went to work!!! Pray that it happens and goes well!!
I just want to keep working so hard so I can be worthy to be a part of someone else's miracle of conversion and just help anyone I can find the truth.
Because this gospel is amazing and I know it's true with my whole heart.
I love you all.
Hope you had a happy birthday Dallin!!

(Oh and happy Halloween tomorrow! Stay safe.)
Ps.  They have authorized us to use Facebook as missionaries so if you see some activity from me, don't be afraid. But don't try to contact me because I will be using it strictly for missionary purposes, but I will chat with you in a month  🏼

Oct. 23, 2017 "Liconita"

Liconita
HI FRIENDS AND FAMILY!!!

Did y'all get the pics? I didn't know if it went thru.

This week was a good week! We had transfers and I get to spend my last little bit in the Independence 3rd ward and still at the VC!!! I'm so grateful.
And I got my new little baby compy! Fresh from the MTC, Sister Licona is from Chicago, IL and she is the sweetest!!!! She has the most powerful testimony and we have had an amazing past few days!

This week we have been able to meet 2 different couples who were members of the RLDS branch. They were both neighbors to our stake president who is a convert of the RLDS church. And he saw us out his window when we were knocking on our door and he's like, " Hey Sondra! (His wife) They're talking ....... and they're in!!!!" Hahaha just like we had angels cheers us on. One of the couples showed us all their Nauvoo paraphernalia, and also shared their testimony with us and got emotional and said you know, we are really just like cousins in our religion!! Haha they are sweet though.

Okay last couple miracles that I really wanna tell is that on sis Licona's first day, it was CRAZY but we had a lesson with a less active named Mavis. Mavis is literally THE SWEETEST YOUNG Polynesian MOM!! She called us one day and she said that she really wanted to meet with us because she wants to change her life and come back to church. OKAY YA. So we met with her and literally just cried with her. She has the strongest testimony ever and I haven't seen anyone who has a heart as repentant as hers. We are so excited to meet with her again this Wednesday!!!! She's amazing!!!

And finally SUNDAY WAS THE PRIMARY PROGRAM!! Aka the best Sunday EVER!!! SOO many visitors and soooo many cute scream-singing kids BUT IT GETS BETTER!!! So bishop was like hey turn off your phones for the sacrament so I was like ok I'll be obedient, and then I left it on silent after I turned it back on. We were just so into the primary program, that we didn't notice the missed calls and texts. So the elders quorum Pres came up to us and is like hey sisters there's two women in the foyer asking for you. They're investigators. Soooo we go out to find that LEAH AND HER ROOMMATE JUST LIKE DECIDED TO SHOW UP AT CHURCH EVEN THOUGH SHE SAID THE NIGHT BEFORE THAT SHE PROBS COULDNT COME. But she started not feeling good so she was leaving, but she said, "I'm going to be here next week, and I'll stay longer :)" WOW MIRACLES PEOPLE!!!!!

I love being a missionary. But more than that, I just love Jesus Christ. I love that He takes us in our weakness and makes us better than we could make ourselves on our own. I love that He loved us with a perfect love, so He loved a perfect life to provide the way for us to be clean. To change, to be perfect in Him. Friends, we were never meant to go through this life on our own. So if you're trying to do it all yourself, think again! It won't work! Turn to Him. Come Unto Him.
You will find a new light in your life that wasn't there before.

Love you all!!! Spread the love to others!!!

Oct. 10, 2017 "We're having a blast out here!"

We’re having a blast out here

Once upon a time, Sister Angerbauer and Sister Bleak were having a lovely evening at the Visitor Center. A cute couple comes out of the shadows of Independence into the light of the VC. Coming from a 3 our of 5 stars YSA activity this boy and his friend thats a girl (NOT girlfriend), these two wanted to look around. Sister A and I quickly discerned that this girl was no member. So we show them around, taking them through Gods plan, showed them all the copies of the Book of Mormon and started talking about missions and next thing you know it, we have found out that this guy, (his name was Tanner) has a brother in the same mission as my brother! What a coincidence! But wait - it gets better. I asked him what his last name was and he's like Wadsworth. And Im like oh haha .. thats funny, I am related to some Wadsworths. And he's like well... My family is from Panaca. If you've ever heard of it. He says this doubtfully. YA IVE HEARD OF IT. Lolol sooooo ya then he says his dad's like best friend is Jared Bleak. soooooooooooooooooo then it just got weird because thats MY DADS name.
Anyway Dad, I met Tanner Wadsworth. Son of Brian Wadsworth I think. (they both got weirded out after that and left ha. ha.) ...
But yeah, basically just day in the life at the Visitor Center. Just chillin with my 3rd cousin.

Haha this week was pretty crazy! Long and good but crazy!

We'll just cut to the chase though.... SISTER ANGERBAUER AND I BOTH GOT TRAINING CALLS!!!!
That means for the last 6 weeks of my mission I get to train a brand new missionary!!!!! I am so excited!!!!!!!!!!! So tomorrow night we will find out which one of us will stay in our area, and who has to leave and either follow up train or whitewash train! But I won't know where I'm going until Thursday morning at transfers. AAAAAhhhhh. (so pls pray i get to just finish in the VC)

This week we have also had all these reps from the Mission Department from Salt Lake observing our mission. Like how we do things... like even how we plan in the morning. haha one woman came to our apartment at 6:30am in her pjs to plan with us lol so that was funny. BUT they are coming to observe our mission because we are one of 12 missions who are testing out new technology. So first we are allowed to use skype as an online proselyting tool (for teaching center online teaching for those who remember that I do that as a VC sister) BUT also,w e are getting ... wait for it ....... SMART PHONES IN THE MISSION!! not til like november but we are going to be using those for proselyting instead of our tablets and ipads now! Itll be cray. Then they'll implement Facebook and all that. So its crazy but kinda cool how amazing the church is and what they can do!

other things that happened this week were: Half mission conference with Elder Echo Hawk! He did a mission tour and it was AMAAAZING!! I just really had so many prayers answered this week. Specific prayers that I'd been praying for a long time.
Both Elder and Sister Echo Hawk are converts to the church, and they shared their conversion story. It was so powerful! He taught us that we don't always see the big picture of where these people will end up.. But we need to know how important we are! President Love talked about having faith - having confidence in the Lord and His promises and having confidence in ourselves. (btrw my subject line is an actual quote from President Love - hes the best) There were so many other amazing things said that I just cant write.

But the other best thing that happened this week was ARIELLE GOT BAPTIZED!!!! My bff from Liberty 1st that Sister Udall and I found! She was the one who got engaged while we were there and just was so prepared. That was like one of the best days of my life.
Arielle was literally soooo happy to be getting baptized. She (and all of us missionaries) was just so excited that it was finally the day!

Saturday also was the trainer's meeting and with all the different representatives from Salt Lake, it was the most AMAZING meeting!!!
I just really felt so comforted this week. I feel that there is so much power in Faith. But theres also a lot of power in doubt. And we CANNOT let our doubts get the best of us. We really have to make an effort to believe and remember how much God loves us and how much trust He has in US!
We never know how much of an effect we have and how great an effect that Heavenly Father has in our lives and the lives of others!

At Arielle's baptism, Arielle pulled Sister Udall and I aside as we were taking pictures and she said, "I just want you two to know how much of a difference you have made in my life. I was so unhappy. And you two girls saved my life. I will never forget what you've done for me."

We can work miracles as instruments in the hands of the Lord if we trust in Him. But we have to trust Him! And trust ourselves! It was the Nephites who fell into iniquity when they began to dwindle in unbelief!! But we have every reason to believe. Because God is Good and He is there for us. He knows each of us and Oh how great His promises are for His children! But none of this matters if you don't choose to believe it.  So believe it!

I just love being a missionary. I truly just feel SO SOSO grateful. It is hard to express all that I feel about my mission and the people I've met and the experiences I've had. I will treasure this time forever.

Love you all,

Sister Bleak

Oct. 9, 2017 "Mosiah 2:17"

Mosiah 2:17
HELLO FAMILY AND FRIENDS!! Happy Monday from good old Independence, Missouri. Where motorized wheelchairs run rampant and where there's a tiny town whose mayor is a dog.

In other news, did you know that McDonalds doesnt serve chicken nuggets and fries until after 10:30? UGH

In other other news, this week was pretty great!!

Not much happened, but we were able to find some new potential investigators!
(the trick here in independence - and actually everywhere - is just to get them to actually keep their appointments)

But there was one night where our plans had fallen through and so we had all this time to find people! It was a darker rainy night and literally no one wanted to answer or was at home for like all the way until 8:30pm. BUT we were trying to follow the spirit and trusted that good things would happen, and so we decided to stop by a less active bishop had referred to us. Kellie Myers. And SHE WAS HOME! AND ANSWERED! And she was so nice! just a friendly normal nice lady. So we got to know her better and it turns out that she still loves the church just has stopped going out of laziness. Turns out as well that she has a nonmember girl living with her - her foster daughter Ashley! And Ashley was so friendly and was interested in talking to us so we were able to set up a return appointment (which they sadly forgot about) BUT once again we were able to stop by and invite them to an FHE with the relief society president and her kids who are the same age and Ashley was like YES I WOULD LOVE TO GO!!! So pray that that works this week!!!

Also sadly we weren't able to have a lesson with the Blackburns. the sweet african american couple we met! But we are hoping to reschedule. so pray for that too.

however, with them canceling on Saturday it provided a way for us to stay at this service project that we were at!
This service project was amazing! The Community of Christ church opened up their auditorium to the homeless and less fortunate. And there are a lot of those here in Independence. That's why this was so amazing! Because literally there were like 300 volunteers and 200 people running booths and then like 600-800 people that came in! People would line up to come in and we would greet them and show them around the place to make sure they could get help with anything they needed. They got help with free dental examinations, blood pressure tests, massages, manicures, food stamps and SO MUCH MORE!!! We got to take around snacks and we ended up meeting an elderly couple who were having trouble breathing from walking the long distance up from their car. So we got them each a wheelchair and ended up pushing them all around the entire event! So we got to know George and Arloa Schornhorst pretty well :) They are so so sweet and Sister Angerbauer and I just felt SOOO uplifted as we were able to serve them and to serve so many people. And I just feel like I could take to heart more what Sister Oscarson, Elder Eyring and others said at conference.

"I testify that the Lord goes before your face whenever you are on His errand. Sometimes you will be the angel the Lord sends to bear others up. Sometimes you will be the one surrounded by angels who bear you up. But always you will have His Spirit to be in your heart, as you have been promised in every sacrament service. You have only to keep His commandments.

The best days are ahead for the kingdom of God on the earth. Opposition will strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ, as it has since the days of the Prophet Joseph Smith. Faith always defeats fear. Standing together produces unity. And your prayers for those in need are heard and answered by a loving God. He neither slumbers nor does He sleep." - Eyring

"What good does it do to save the world if we neglect the needs of those closest to us and those whom we love the most? How much value is there in fixing the world if the people around us are falling apart and we don’t notice? Heavenly Father may have placed those who need us closest to us, knowing that we are best suited to meet their needs.

Ask your Heavenly Father to show you those around you who need your help and to inspire you on how to best serve them. Remember that the Savior most often ministered to one person at a time." - Sis. Oscarson

I have a greater desire to serve others and put others before myself because really, thats where we find true joy - and truly are able to serve God. So i invite you all to do the same!!!

Love you all. It is such a privilege and blessing to be a missionary.

Sister Bleak

ps. for those who care... I got into BYU for Winter Semester!!!

And lastly listen closely. This guy lives in New York and I've been
contacting him through teaching center(online teaching - he had
requested a free bible) and I called him one day and he was speechless
because he had literally JUST been praying to God that He would show
Himself to him and help him change his life and then I called. Ahhhh
miracles god is really everyone!! So listen close to what he says. I
love people.

Oct. 2, 2017 "Accomplished His Purposes"

Accomplished His Purposes
Greetings from INDE, MO!

Tracting story of the week: Our mission president challenged us to tract more... SOO Sunday between sessions, we decided to try it out by knocking doors around a less active's house we tried to visit who wasn't home. So we're like ok sure let's go knock on this door. And as we walk up the driveway and get closer to the door, sister A goes: "Sister." And stops dead in her tracks. The door was open and we realized there was a guy lying on the floor right by the door. Like not moving. so we just slowly backed away and hoped he wasn't dead. Probably passed out.
BUT we gave a Book of Mormon to the man at the next house!

Anyways, this week was pretty darn great! We were able to see a ton of little miracle tender mercies being able to contact some solid people!! Lots of part member families and kids of those families were way excited to talk to us! So we are going to get some awesome things happening!

Another fun miracle was that my uncle showed up at the Visitor Center!!! It was SOO fun to see him! And be able to show him the visitor center and share everything I have learned! Such a neat experience and huge tender mercy

A lot of other things happened like we tried to go to the Liberty Jail with our investigator and the Stake president, BUT she canceled, BUT she came to watch Conference. I also went on exchanges with Sister Davies who is like my soul sister she is awesome and we took an interesting tour where a couple members brought in their nonmember friends and they ended up bashing so that was awkward.

BUT here's a sweet miracle. So last night we had some time before we we were goi to another appointment, and we felt like we should try a potential in our area book show e had t contacted before. SO it's getting dark out, but we go try their house and it's that awkward moment when they're are people in their car in the driveway as you walk up... soooo we walked up anyway and the guy in the car motions for us to come over and we ask for the guy we were trying to find and he's like what are you, are you cops? Hahaha were like no no! So we started telling us about how we're missionaries and what we do, and he's like oh okay! Come on inside! So we went inside to talk to him and his wife and they had ALLL these awesome questions and they were super interested and were so excited to have a copy of the Book of Mormon that was all their own! Neither of us have very much time but we told them we'd love to come back and share more and they were like oh yeah how about Saturday afternoon here's my number!!! So ya next week I'll tell y'all how our appointment with Nekita and Andre go! (Yes they are black)

OK lastly I loveeeeedddd Conference! I talked to this lady from CA while doing online teaching, and told her about #LdsConf and told her that we get to listen to the prophets and apostles of our day, as they reveal to us what the Lord wants us to know. And she was like "NO WAY. Heck ya I'm watching that!!" Haha I loved her excitement!
I wrote down questions that I had and filled in the answers with different quotes as I listened and it just was a testament to me of how well our father in heaven knows us and how inspired the prophet and apostles are!!
Conference is also a very humbling experience for me because as a visitor center missionary, our shifts overlap with the sessions and when people come into the VC, we gotta take em through. Even if Conference is going. So I have yet to listen to the first 3 talks of each morning session. So, as an imperfect human, I get upset at these members who are like "oh we were just gonna watch Conference later." And I'm like WELL I CANT REALLY DO THAT. Haha. However, I sucked up my pride and brought these families through. And I will watch it later, when I can. But as I put my pride and my desires aside, and remembered my purpose, I had an awesome experience with this family! They were moving from CA to UT and didn't have a place to live yet and so I was able to relate to them and the circumstance of moving out of inspiration and faith.
Just constantly seeking to develop that love that Joseph Smith describes, "a man filled with the love of God is not content with blessing his own life, but seeks to bless the entire human race." (Paraphrased).
So basically I really love elder Eyrings talk and elder Christofferson and Holland and Uchtdprf especially. I loved the theme that we are never too far out of reach from our Father in Heaven. That we are divine Sons and Daughters. And we can live up to that! None of us has to be perfect, but we can strive to be with hope in the Savior.

This week was just really great. The Lord was directing our paths. Even though we didn't accomplish everything WE wanted to, we know that we accomplished everything HE needed us to. I just really have noticed how the Lord is in the details. He recognizes our diligence and our faith, and consecrates our efforts to be according to His plan. Sometimes as we seek to follow our plan and go through our day, it can be easy to treat it all like a checklist of things to do. But as I have sincerely tried to remember what this work is really about - that I and my companion are first and foremost disciples and representatives of Jesus Christ - then we are more likely to follow the spirit and divert from our plans so we can minister to the one. Like choosing to stand outside our apartment before we went home, talking to a lady who had a hard day and sharing with her that someone loves her and died for her so she could have joy. That's what it's all about.

Love you all,

Sister Bleak
